Tau is a particle name I've borrowed from physics. I think of it as a way of referring to 'a little piece', or an arrangement of little pieces. I like that it looks like Tao, too (though that's pronounced differently: 'dow').
One of my favourite activities is to look for things like stones on beaches, and the little beaches of Dunedin’s harbour have special treats to find, which are fragments of old broken crockery. The waves and the sand beautifully wear the best of these into shapes that almost look natural.
When I find a piece that excites me I hold it in my left hand as a ‘tuner’ to aid my search. I make little collections of the sweetest pieces and arrange them to make pictures. I love the feeling of these fragments in my hands; they are an excellent synthesis of human -made form and natural form. It is this synthesis I try to emulate in my sculptures.
